Great day for trip to Santa Barbara, and a walk to the beach for lunch. Here's a video of the departure from 15R at SBA.
and here's a very cool out of focus look at the landing back at Santa Monica:

Big Bear, again... but had to divert to Van Nuys after a fast moving layer socked in Santa Monica. Motivator for collecting all available weather data and improving my interpretation of the data.

Jepp VFR+GPS Charts - First Impressions
Just got my new Los Angeles Jeppesen VFR+GPS chart. Here are my first positive impressions:
1) It's a piece of cake to make out the airspace floors and ceilings. On the FAA charts, things end up looking like a big blob and it takes some time to let the data rise out of the puzzle.
2) The weight of the paper is good. Seems easier to manage when folding and unfolding.
3) All the data, not just airspaces, is much easier to read.
4) The airport diagrams on the reverse are handy, but there are so few, it can't replace your AFD or other resources.
5) I feel a bit more calm looking at the relatively complex airspace, compared to the FAA charts.
But... there are some things about this chart that are going to make it difficult to use...
1) There are no approach freqs. I find this very annoying, since I pick up flight following whenever possible. This is a big problem for me.
2) The map is oriented at an angle. There may be a good reason for this, but I have not found it yet.
3) I've actually found examples of missing VFR waypoint data! One critical example is the intersection of the Hawthorne and 405 freeway, used as the northbound entry to the Mini Route. The flag is there, and textual description, but the waypoint ID is missing (VPLSR). The FAA chart HAS this info. These would seem like a pretty clear shortfall. This chart SHOULD have such info, since modern pilots are likely to drop that point into their GPS to navigate towards (I did... just a couple of days ago). It's a bit unsettling that a chart geared towards GPS flying would lack GPS info which appears on a 'standard' chart.

First flight to Catalina (AVX). Also first time through the Mini Route northbound. Cranky controller at Hawthorne!
The illusions created by AVX's surrounding terrain, as well as its slope, were very apparent. Critical to trust the altimeter and get on TPA.

BFR COMPLETE - CURRENT AGAIN!
After a couple of false starts over the last 2 years, I'm once again fully current.
