How does Charlie work?

Charlie offers a Charlie Demand Deposit Account with a Charlie Visa ® Debit Card through our partner bank, Sutton Bank, Member FDIC. Charlie is a financial service designed specifically for people 62 and older. A big focus is protecting your money and keeping your account safe. You can use your Charlie account just like you would any other bank account.

I signed up for Charlie, what's next?

When you sign up for Charlie, you're giving permission for your Social Security payments to be deposited into your Charlie account. Charlie then sends a request to Social Security to switch your direct deposit. This usually takes 1-2 weeks.You'll get a message from both Charlie and Social Security when the switch is complete.Once it's confirmed, you can expect to get your payments 3-5 days early! For example, if you usually get paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, you'll now get it on the Friday before that Wednesday. Does Charlie charge fees?

Answer

We have no fees for sign up, minimum balance, transactions, and there are no monthly account fees. Charlie charges fees for out-of-network ATM withdrawals and balance inquiries, card replacements (the first replacement is free of charge), and international transactions. We do not charge fees or interest for early access to Social Security payments. Other third parties involved in transactions may charge fees outside of Charlie's control, which may be disclosed at the time of the transaction. When do I get paid for my Social Security benefits?

If your payment is typically scheduled for the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month, you can expect your payment to be deposited into your Charlie Account on the Friday before the scheduled Wednesday payment. If your payment is typically scheduled for the 3rd of the month, you will receive payments 3 business days early, meaning you will automatically receive payments before the 1st of every month. Regardless of which day you receive Social Security each month, payments are typically deposited into Charlie Accounts around 5pm CT.

You'll get a notification on your phone and a text message when your money arrives, as long as you have those notifications turned on.

How does direct deposit work?

Answer

To set up direct deposit, you need to give your employer or benefits provider your Charlie account number and routing number. You can find these in the Charlie app under "Account & routing numbers."

Will I get my tax refund early?

Answer

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) wants people to use direct deposit for their tax refunds. They usually send out refunds in less than 21 days and will tell you when to expect yours.Charlie can't promise you'll get your refund early, but they'll send you a text and notification as soon as they receive it.Your refund will be deposited into your account as soon as Charlie gets it. If you don't see it yet, Charlie can't give you any more information. Contact the IRS.

Where's my direct deposit?

To see your expected SSA direct deposit arrival time, tap the Social Security payment tile on the Charlie app’s home page. Once Charlie receives your direct deposit from your employer, payroll provider, or benefits provider, you'll get a push notification and text message, as long as these alerts are enabled in your app settings.Delays can happen due to factors beyond Charlie's control, such as bank holidays or timing from your payer. If delays persist, contact your payer to confirm the direct deposit details.

No, direct deposit is the easiest, but you can also use:- ACH transfers: This is when you link another bank account to your Charlie account.- Cash deposits: You can deposit cash at stores like Walgreens, Walmart, 7-Eleven, CVS, Dollar General, Dollar Tree and many more.- Mobile check cashing: You can add checks to your Charlie account balance using your phone.

We're excited to have you share Charlie with your family or friends. To start referring your loved ones, ensure you have received at least one Social Security direct deposit through your Charlie account. Once you are an active Charlie member, you will have the opportunity to refer others for an incentive. To see if you're eligible to refer others, select 'More' on your Charlie app follow instructions to refer a family or friend.

How do I transfer money from my Charlie account to another bank account?

There are a few ways to move money to another bank:

1. Link your accounts: In the app, tap "Move Money," then "Withdraw from Charlie." Enter the details and link the other bank account (it must be in your name). It takes about 5 business days for the money to arrive.

2. To a debit card: You can send money instantly to a debit card. Tap "Move Money," then "Withdraw from Charlie," and choose "Send to my debit card instead." The card must be in your name. It should arrive in about 30 minutes.

3. Use Plaid: You can link your Charlie account to your other bank using a service called Plaid, if your bank supports it.

4. Enter account info: You can manually link your Charlie account by entering your account and routing numbers into your other bank account.

5. Send yourself a check: You can send a check from your Charlie app to yourself and deposit it in your other bank.

How can I move money from my other bank account to my Charlie account?

You can link your other bank account to your Charlie account using a service called Plaid. Make sure your other bank works with Plaid and that the name on both accounts is the same. If your bank doesn't work with Plaid, you can enter your Charlie account and routing numbers into your other bank account. This lets you move money directly.

Here's what you need to know:

- If you sent money from your Charlie account to a linked bank account, tap "Scheduled" on the "Move Money" page and locate the transfer you'd like to cancel.

- If you sent money from your Charlie account to your debit card, you can't cancel it after it's sent.

- If money is coming into your Charlie account from another bank, Charlie can't cancel it. You need to contact the other bank.

Here are some tips:

- Use a debit card from a U.S. bank. Prepaid cards, credit cards, and business debit cards won't work.

- If it's been more than 7 days, the transfer has expired. Ask the person who sent it to you to cancel and resend it.

How do I accept a Send money transfer if I’m not a Charlie member?

- If someone sends you money through Charlie, you can easily claim it even if you don't have a Charlie account.

- You'll need a debit card from a U.S. bank. Enter your card information when asked. If you have questions, contact the person who sent you the money.

- Remember, you need to accept the money within 7 days, or it will be sent back.

How can I pay my bills online?

There are three ways to pay bills:

1. Use the "Pay Bills" feature: You can see all your bills and payment information in one place. Find it in the app under "Move Money."

2. Send a check: Charlie can send a check for you for free.

3. Give your Charlie information to the bill company: They can take the money directly from your account (this is called ACH) or by entering your Charlie debit card number.

Daily ATM withdrawal limits allow you to set a custom limit for the total amount of cash that you can withdraw from your Charlie Account in a given day. When a limit is set, Charlie automatically blocks any ATM withdrawals that would take your account over this limit.

Outside of the daily ATM withdrawal limit that you can set, Charlie has a daily ATM withdrawal limit of $1,000 that no customer can exceed. The ATM itself may also have a withdrawal limit.

Charlie is able to detect if a transaction is coming from a merchant outside of the U.S. and if the user has turned on "Disable non US Transactions," then Charlie will block any transactions coming from a non US merchant.

A user can turn this setting on by going to Fraud Shield > Scrolling to Advanced Settings > Clicking Disable Non US Transactions > Toggling Disable Non US Transactions on.

If you take no action, the money leaves your account at the conclusion of the pause with no further action required.
